Chapter 30

When I got to the office, Louie’s car was already there. I pulled in front of it and parked.

“Well, look who finally decided to make an appearance,” Louie said. “Late night with Miss Layla?”

“No, just taking care of some things. How was your night?”

“Oh, I was probably home forty-five minutes after you. I’m heading over to the courthouse in a few minutes. Walking a first-time offender through the process. I expect he’ll be found guilty, pay the fine, and if he’s smart, he’ll attend the classes, and I’ll never see him again, hopefully. You working on anything?”

“I’m going to see if I can learn anything else on this Alex Chillcot coming to town. I think—“

“Did you catch the news this morning?”

“No, why? What happened?”

“Another shooting early this morning. Actually, a deadbeat client I represented once some years back. A guy by the name of Leroy Ross. Someone shot him down on Jackson Street around 4:00 this morning.”

“That name rings a bell.”

“I probably mentioned him. He stiffed me for fifteen hundred bucks because he was found guilty of driving while under the influence. Nothing I could do but take him through the motions. I got him off with time in the workhouse, but apparently, that wasn’t good enough, even though it was his second offense. Anyway, someone shot him earlier this morning.”

“He was shot at 4:00 in the morning, and they already released his name?”

“No, I heard about the shooting on the morning news, but a friend at the courthouse called me with Leroy’s name about twenty minutes ago. That lower Jackson Street area is where he operates, or rather it was.”

“Interesting, that’s downtown. Sounds to me like there’s a possible turf war going on. And the person who called you was sure this Leroy Ross was the victim.”

“That’s what he told me. Ross was making his way up the illegal gambling ladder. He hosted high-price poker games and ran some betting operations. Hey, listen, I should probably head out. By the way, where’s Morton this morning?” Louie said, looking around.

“Oh, he got a new chew toy and was having an up close and personal relationship with that this morning, so I left him at home. Besides, I might be running around later today, and I didn’t want to stick you with him.”

“Oh, he’s never a problem,” Louie said as he stuffed a file into his briefcase.

“Thanks, and good luck this morning.”

“I already know how it’s going to go,” Louie said as he slipped on his coat. He gave me a wave as he headed out the door.

I emptied the coffee pot into my mug. The mug was maybe two-thirds full. I took a sip and shuddered. Clearly, the coffee had been made yesterday morning, which meant it had been on the burner for over twenty-four hours. I dumped it down the sink and made a fresh pot.

While the fresh pot was brewing, I debated for a moment and then picked up the phone and called Tubby Gustafson. I got the result I expected.
